RefWorks - getting started

for  people who have a RefWorks account, such as UWE Bristol Students

Step 5:

Learn about more advanced features

There are other facilities in RefWorks, such as organising folders in your database, or customising the referencing output style (so you can match the Faculty guidelines exactly there are plans to distribute a file with an appropriate format, but you can modify the output file yourself quite easily). These are all explained in the online RefWorks Tutorials. If you click on Help within RefWorks whilst online, or click here, you can get to the tutorials.

There is also a RefWorks Quick Start Guide here.

If you want to learn more about searching databases in Ovid I recommend the tutorial here. This tutorial is based on the “old” look OVID, which has recently undergone a cosmetic makeover, though the principles remain the same. I will post other tutorials here when they are available.

I urge you to learn about Subject Headings and using the facility to “Map to Subject Headings” in these databases, as you are much more likely to achieve an effective search. This is explained in the tutorial.

  Notes

The use of RefWorks depends on having a subscription to the service – this may be via your college or University.

Your librarians should be able to advise you on any issues regarding access to, or use of RefWorks.

This guide is written completely independently of RefWorks, Ovid or UWE, Bristol. I have created this in good faith in the hope that it might help students get started with RefWorks, to the benefit of their studies.

I cannot be held responsible for any errors or omissions, or any actions undertaken by readers of this guide.

Whenever preparing academic work ensure that sure you follow the course regulations and guidelines you have been given, including instructions for referencing, which may differ from the examples given here.
